The butter knife rest lives again
A butter knife rest is an item with ancient origins that has traditionally been used to put butter knives or jam spoons on to prevent smudging tablecloths or plates. In Sweden they are called ”smörtax”, which means ”butter dachshund”. The name comes from the fact that a butter knife rest was usually given the shape of a small, sculpted
dachshund.
Signe is a modern interpretation of the traditional butter knife rest. It harks back to the small dachshunds used in the past, but its larger and modern shape makes it useful both for table settings and as a rest for serving utensils. Signe is available in brass and nickel, sold in pairs, and is stackable.

How come you ended up designing a butter knife rest?
”With a passion for food and an interest in old classic utensils, this product was developed. The inspiration comes mainly from two directions. My dachshund dog is of course named Signe but my grandmother was also named Signe, albeit her middle name. My grandmother was a master in the kitchen and the butter knife rest was always part of the table setting. Signe will not only be a practical utensil but also a fine detail both on a set table and on the kitchen counter”, says designer Viktor Erlandsson.
